Introduction: You travel along shorelines and among islands that were completely covered by ice just over 200 years ago. When Captain George Vancouver charted adjacent waters of Icy Strait in 1794, he and his crew described what we now call Glacier Bay as just a small five-mile indent in a gigantic glacier that stretched off to the horizon. That massive glacier was more than 4,000 feet thick in places, up to 20 miles wide, and extended more than 100 miles to the St. Elias mountain range. By 1879, however, naturalist John Muir discovered that the ice had retreated more than 30 miles forming an actual bay. By 1916, the Grand Pacific Glacier – the main glacier credited with carving the bay – had melted back 60 miles to the head of what is now Tarr Inlet. Today’s visitors can see the answer to that question during the course of one trip into the bay to the tidewater glaciers. Such a journey is like going back to the last ice age. The land near the mouth of the bay, long-ago released from the grip of glaciers, has had the most time to recover and is now blanketed by mature spruce and hemlock forests. As you travel toward the glaciers the vegetation gets younger and smaller, until you reach the face of the ice where nothing grows at all.

1. Day Juneau: Transfer to our hotel hospitality suite in preparation for your cruise. The hotel’s convenient waterfront locale is a perfect base for exploring Alaska’s beautiful capital city, one of the most popular cruise ship ports in Alaska. Accessible only by air or sea, Juneau sits in a rainforest with the Mendenhall Glacier and the Juneau Icefield in its backyard. Board your ship to begin your cruise down the Gastineau Channel

2. Day Skagway & Haines: Relive the Gold Rush in the picturesque setting of Skagway, where many of the early gold seekers set off with dreams of becoming rich. Catch the Skagway Streetcar for a tour of this charming town. Head down mountain-lined Lynn Canal for a visit to Haines, situated on a quiet bay under the Chilkat Mountains. Learn the Haines history and Native culture at Fort William H. Seward. Haines is also known for its large concentration of eagles and its artist population, with works displayed in local gallerie

3. Day Glacier Bay: Glacier Bay National Park, Wilderness and Preserve sits at the northern end of the Alaska Panhandle, stretching from Gustavus west of Juneau - north through one of the narrowest parts where the state is narrowed down to about 20 miles from Mount Fairweather to the Gulf of Alaska, on to the Alsek River, one of the state's 26 national wild and scenic rivers and a favorite of rafters. The park has a long bay, which has several smaller arms, and a share of the Gulf of Alaska coastline. Enter the 3.3 million acre nature wonderland where a National Park Service Ranger will come onboard to offer information on the flora and fauna of this impressive region. Over 200 species of fish are found in Park waters, including all five species of Pacific salmon. About 220 species of birds have been recorded in the Park as well as large populations of land mammals. Have your binoculars and camera with you on deck as the Ranger helps you look for mountain goats, brown and black bears, coyote, wolverine, moose, harbor seals, puffins, and murres

4. Day Icy Strait: The annual summer conjunction of currents, bottom topography, and tidal energy causes an extraordinary bloom of plankton to occur. This bloom creates a biological richness that attracts humpbacks and other marine mammals like sea lions and seals. Captain’s Choice cruising may also include inflatable excursion craft outings or bow landings from the Spirit of Alaska, to look for wildlife like brown bear, Sitka black-tailed deer and wolves in the old-growth forests of Sitka spruce and western hemlock. You may also see playful otters, and bald eagles

5. Day Juneau: Disembark in Juneau. If you have time before your flight we’ll give you ideas for exploring this interesting capital city. Transfer to the airport for your return flight home
